Here we go again...Environmental groups seek review of Bonner Bridge plan
One day after a review board agreed to replace the disintegrating Herbert C. Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet with a short span, two environmental groups asked for an investigation into the lawfulness of the process that led to the decision.
The Southern Environmental Law Center and Audubon North Carolina on Tuesday wrote to the White House Council on Environmental Quality to ask it to investigate whether the National Environmental Policy Act was followed.
The environmental groups have been advocates of the proposed 17.5-mile alternative that would bypass troublesome N.C. 12 and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
After years of wrestling over a replacement plan, a team of four state and federal upper-level officials agreed on Monday that the best choice would be to build a short bridge over the inlet first, then follow with small bridges on N.C. 12 as needed.
The Council on Environmental Quality referees disputes between agencies over environmental assessments. In May 2003, the council killed the 30-plus-year-old Oregon Inlet jetty proposal.
